Background
Following a recent public meeting, we agreed to ask the community in central Dalkeith if they would support a residents only parking permit scheme. The survey has now closed.
The proposed scheme would operate Monday to Saturday between 8am and 6pm. Each household qualifying for an on-street parking permit would be able to buy up to two annual resident permits. We expect these to cost £75 for the first permit and £100 for the second.
We also proposed to offer permits for the North Wynd and St Andrews car parks for residents living in streets nearby. Each qualifying household could buy up to two annual permits, expected to cost £50 for the first permit and £75 for the second.
What happens next
We will process all responses and, depending on the level of support for the proposals, we will decide one of the following:
- If there is little support for the proposals, there will be no further action.
- If there are a lot of suggested alternatives, we will consider them. We will then change the proposals before undertaking formal consultation.
- If there is good support for the proposals, we will draw up detailed plans and more consultation will take place. If this shows that most local addresses support the scheme, a draft Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) will be advertised, allowing 21 days for formal consultation. If there are no objections, the restrictions will be introduced and the draft TRO made permanent. If objections are received during the legal process, we will need to consider these and present a report to Midlothian Council for a decision.
