Compostable packaging -
What to do
Please place compostable packaging (eg: plates, tubs, cups and cutlery) in your grey bin.
They cannot be recycled in our food waste or garden waste collection services.
As food decomposes the methane and heat released is captured by the food waste processing plant.
When compostable packaging decomposes no methane or heat is released. There items are therefore not suitable for the process.
Starch or compostable bags can be used as caddy liners, but as all bags are removed it’s probably cheaper and easier to use a plastic one.
As there is no easy way to check if packaging is compostable or not, all packaging and bags placed in your brown bin will be removed as “contamination” and sent to the Energy from Waste Facility.
