Who should apply?
Anyone who operates a pet shop (including from their home or online). It is illegal to sell pets from a market stall. -
You do not need a Pet Shop Licence if you:
- are selling the offspring of your own pets
- or are selling pedigree animals bred by you
- or hold a Dog Breeder's Licence.

Additional costs
New applicant’s premises also require assessment by a Midlothian Council appointed vet. -
Timescales (usual)
Pet Shop licences last for 12 months (from 1 January to 31 December) and must be renewed annually. -
Additional information
An Environmental Health Officer, who may be accompanied by our Veterinary Officer, will inspect your premises before they issue your licence. They will check that the premises and your animal welfare arrangements are suitable. -

Complete the application form and submit it to Environmental Health along with the correct fee. -
