Conservation Areas in Midlothian

Conservation Areas are areas of historic and/or architectural interest designated by us. This ensures that their character is preserved and enhanced.

There are currently 21 conservation areas in Midlothian.

Conservation Area boundaries

Use the Midlothian Local Development Plan (MLDP) 2017 Proposals Map to find the boundaries of Midlothian's conservation areas. See the "Help" function at the top right of that page for assistance.

Planning controls in Conservation Areas

If you intend to have work carried out on a property in a conservation area, you will normally need to apply to us for planning permission.

Where work needs planning permission, policies in the Midlothian Local Plan ensure that development is of a high quality, and that it preserves and/or enhances the character of the area.

The extent of planning controls varies between different conservation areas. Please contact the Council's Planning section if you are unsure if your proposed work needs an application.
