Local authority verifiers
The Scottish Government is responsible for the Building Standards system in Scotland. The Building Standards Division manages Building Standards legislation and guidance documents, appoints verifiers, and checks how verifiers operate the system.
Scottish Ministers appoint verifiers, and each local authority is verifier for their own geographical area.
Who delivers the Building Standards service?
Midlothian Council is the verifier for the Midlothian area. Our role is to:
- Independently check building warrant applications, grant building warrants, inspect the associated building works, and issue completion certificates.
- Enforce building legislation for building works carried out without building warrants.
- Ensure public safety in respect of dangerous and defective buildings.
