Local tributes to HM Queen Elizabeth II

Public holiday on Monday 19 September

In line with Scottish Government guidance, Monday 19 September was a public holiday for the Queen’s state funeral.

Local proclamation ceremony

Following the principal Proclamation of The King in London, more than 300 local people came to a local ceremony on Sunday 11 September at 2pm outside the Corn Exchange in Dalkeith where Midlothian Provost Debbi McCall formally proclaimed King Charles III as the new sovereign. Her Majesty's Lord-Lieutenant of Midlothian, Lieutenant Colonel Richard Callander also attended. 

Books of condolence

Following the announcement of the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, books of condolence were open at venues across Midlothian.

The books were available during normal opening hours at the following council buildings:

Books of condolence were available at Crichton Collegiate Church and Rosslyn Chapel.

Union flags

Union flags were flown in accordance with national protocol at Midlothian House, the Lasswade Centre and Penicuik Town Hall. 

Flowers

Residents who wished to leave flowers as a mark of respect could do so at:

  • Loanhead Memorial Park 
  • Penicuik War Memorial 
  • Gorebridge War Memorial 
  • Danderhall War Memorial
