What the data tells us
- 504 crimes per 10,000 population (4,953 crimes) were recorded in Midlothian in 2024/25. This is an increase of 283 (6.1%) from the previous year.
Types of Crime:
- Group 1: Non sexual crimes of violence;
- Group 2: sexual crimes;
- Group 3: crimes of dishonesty;
- Group 4: damage and reckless behaviour
- Group 5: crimes against society
The most common crime type recorded was ‘crime of dishonesty’ – which includes housebreaking, theft of motor vehicles, shoplifting, fraud, and other thefts.
Midlothian is the second lowest local authority in the Lothian area for recorded crimes per head of population in 2024/25.
The percentage of crimes/offences cleared up by the police in Midlothian (i.e., where there is a sufficiency of evidence under Scots law, to justify consideration of criminal proceedings) was 51.2% on 2024/25.
Domestic Abuse
- 1,257 incidents of domestic abuse were recorded by Police in Midlothian (2023/24), an increase of 132 (11.7%) from 2022/23.
- 35% of domestic abuse incidents resulted in a crime report in 2023/24.
