Passivhaus project brings community benefits

The contractor building Midlothian Council’s first Passivhaus project in Bonnyrigg has donated £2,000 towards Bonnyrigg Rose Community Football Club’s (CFC) Summer Football Festival.

Cheque presentation

Director of Fleming Buildings Ltd Ronnie Burrows presented the cheque to coach David Fairgrieve of Bonnyrigg Rose at a special ceremony at Burnbrae Primary with the club’s 2014s squad.

Community minded 

Mr Burrows said: “As a family-owned SME, we are very community minded and are committed to delivering wider benefit to the communities we work alongside. We were delighted to be able to support this initiative.

Supporting children 

“We have had extensive community engagement, particularly with the children at Burnbrae Primary School and hope this donation allows as many children as possible to benefit from this summer programme focused on wellbeing.”

Lasting memories

Mr Fairgrieve said: “On behalf of Bonnyrigg Rose CFC 2014s we were absolutely delighted to receive this donation.  This will allow them to take part in the Summer Festival which will attract teams from all round Scotland and will also make long lasting memories when they all get the opportunity to go on a trip.

Maximum benefit

Midlothian Council’s Cabinet Member for housing, Councillor Stuart McKenzie said: “We’re committed to building energy-efficient and affordable homes for our residents and also getting maximum benefit for the existing local communities.  

Local sponsorship

“We attached a number of stipulations to this project, one of which was that Fleming Buildings would sponsor a local group with links to the primary school nearby. 

Summer of fun

“We’re delighted they’ve chosen to sponsor a summer festival.  This club has a long history in the community and I’m sure many of the local primary pupils will have great fun enjoying the fresh air and exercise thanks to the donation from Fleming and the hard work of the volunteers at the club.”

Energy-efficient homes*

Passivhaus literally means a ‘Passive House’. This sets building standards developed by the Passivhaus Institute in Germany for homes that are energy efficient, comfortable and affordable. These are the first ever council houses planned for Midlothian which meet these energy efficiency standards. 

Innovative housing programme

These new homes are part of Phase 3 of the council’s innovative house building programme. The homes were designed by architects Smith Scott Mullan Associates.
