More than 1 million bulbs planted across Midlothian

Parks and roundabouts across Midlothian are awash with colour thanks to our Land and Countryside teams who are maintaining more than 1 million bulbs and wildflowers planted last year.

Government funding

The council used money from the Scottish Government’s Nature Restoration Fund to buy and plant 1,184,670 butterfly and bee friendly bulbs.

Thanks to the gardeners

Midlothian Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for green spaces, Councillor Dianne Alexander came to Riverside Park in Dalkeith to enjoy the crocuses and thank just some of the gardening team.

In more than 20 parks and roundabouts

She said: “It feels as though it’s been grey and raining for weeks now but thanks to this ambitious initiative in the autumn of 2023, more than 20 parks and roundabouts are bursting with colour.

Lifting spirits

“I’m sure it’s helping lift everyone’s spirits as we wait for the better spring weather. A huge thank you to everyone involved in this project to plant more than one million bulbs for our communities. Many of the flowers will bloom again and again so they’ll be giving pleasure for years to come.”
