New Equalities programme planned

A new Equalities programme to make sure the workforce is more diverse and representative of the communities it serves is among a range of measures, Midlothian Council is planning to meet its Fair Work First commitments.

National initiative

Fair Work First is the Scottish Government’s policy for driving high quality and fair work, and workforce diversity.

Lots done already

At the full Council meeting on Tuesday, councillors were updated on fair work practices already adopted by the council. 

No zero hours contracts

These include not using zero hours contract, being a Living Wage employer, trade union recognition, and opportunities to have employees’ voices heard.

Diverse and inclusive workforce

Future plans to review overtime, casual workers, agency and fixed term contracts will make sure the council has a sustainable workforce while investing more in apprenticeships will help create a more diverse, inclusive and skilled future workforce.

First council to introduce an IVF and Miscarriage Policy

Council Leader Councillor Kelly Parry said: “I’m delighted to lead a council that promotes fair work. Midlothian is committed to fair work practices and fostering inclusivity and diversity across our workforce. For example, we were the first council in 2022 to introduce an IVF and Miscarriage Policy, and we continue to support our workforce as a family friendly and flexible organisation.”
