provost award

Provost Debbi McCall said she was delighted to have been shortlisted for last night’s prestigious Local Government Information Unit (LGIU) national awards.

Five finalists

Provost McCall was one of five finalists for the Community Champion Award.

Third year Midlothian has been nominated

At the awards ceremony at Edinburgh City Chambers, Provost McCall congratulated winner Councillor Elaine McSporran of Glasgow City Council and said: “I was in great company with my fellow nominees, including worthy winner Cllr McSporran and I was particularly chuffed to be shortlisted as this is the third year Midlothian has been represented.

Huge honour

“Being provost and a ward councillor is a huge honour that bring with it opportunities to make a real difference to local communities.

Award in itself

“That feels like a win in itself.”

Hot on the heels

Council Leader Councillor Kelly Parry was nominated for an LGIU award in 2021 and Councillor Connor McManus won Young Councillor of the Year in 2022.

Second nomination

Provost McCall was nominated for Community Champion last year and this year made it through to the final.

Representing our communities

Provost McCall has been involved in historic community events, including the proclamation of King Charles III in Midlothian. She was one of the founding members of Penicuik Ambassadors, a team of volunteers set up during Covid to support vulnerable local residents which continues its work in the town today.

Town centre improvements

The provost has also been heavily involved in the Penicuik Town Heritage Regeneration Project, a major initiative to regenerate and improve the historic town centre.

Celebrating success

Provost McCall said: “It was a great night and the chance to celebrate the passion and commitment of councillors across Scotland to change lives for the better.”
