Celebrating 20 Years of Active Schools!

Midlothian Council’s Active Schools has produced a new video celebrating its 20 year anniversary.

Crucial role

For two decades, Active Schools has played a crucial role in fostering a culture of physical activity and healthy living among our young people by providing more and higher quality opportunities to take part in sport and physical activity before school, during lunchtime and after school.

Key priorities

Active Schools strives towards a set of key priorities providing children and young people positive physical activity opportunities and pathways to lifelong participation.
This long-term investment in health and wellbeing continues to be a key platform for driving inclusion in sport.

Active Schools in Midlothian

Midlothian Active Schools Team link with all Midlothian primary, secondary and ASN schools: leading and supporting effective pathways to connect schools, sports clubs and communities; and providing inclusive opportunities using targeted approaches to remove barriers to participation.

Provision of free activities for Midlothian pupils

Through these positive links with local sports clubs, a robust network of volunteers, and by training and developing young people as leaders, all Active Schools Midlothian physical activity opportunities have no cost to the participant.

Interschool competition and events

In addition to the extra-curricular opportunities, Active Schools Midlothian continue to deliver a very successful Midlothian wide annual calendar of sporting events, consisting of basketball, hockey and athletics, to name a few, which are supported by a number of local sports clubs, volunteers and young leaders.

Sportshall Athletics Event success

Most recently, 420 Midlothian School pupils from 21 Midlothian primary schools competed in the Midlothian Active Schools Sportshall Athletics Event - which has been running for as long as Active Schools in Midlothian.
All schools taking part had a very enjoyable competitive experience - and congratulations to the overall winning team from Danderhall Primary School.

Milestone year

During this milestone year for Active Schools, the council will continue to celebrate the hard work and dedication of every single Active Schools Coordinator, volunteer, local sports club and participant who has contributed to making the Active Schools initiative such a success over the past 20 years!
