Young carers invited to apply for funding

Are you a young carer under the age of 18 who cares for a family member or relative in Midlothian? This could be caring for someone experiencing a disability, ill health, a mental health condition or substance misuse?

Caring can be tough at times

Being a young carer can involve having a lot of responsibilities and can be tough on young people. You may find that you have little time to chill out.

Support

The Midlothian Young Carers Project (MYCP) works to support young carers get a break from their caring role.

Giving young carers a break

MYCP have a Time2chill fund to enable young carers to take some time for themselves. Young carers can use this fund for anything that will give them a break from caring. 

Examples 

  • a subscription to a TV, movie or music channel
  • a trip to visit relatives or friends
  • outdoor activities or sports equipment
  • IT equipment, such as a tablet or Kindle
  • a cinema or other activity ticket
  • a contribution to driving lessons

This is not an exhaustive list and MYCP will also consider funding other items or activities not listed here up to the value of £250.

Encouraging young carers to apply

Midlothian Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for children’s services, Councillor Ellen Scott said:

“Our young carers do an amazing job and are much valued. They give so much of their own time and energy to care for others who need support it is absolutely vital they make time for themselves. It is very easy to become isolated and overwhelmed. I’d encourage all young carers to find out about the Time2Chill Fund.”
