Anne and Peter celebrate their Sapphire anniversary

Sapphire wedding

Congratulations to Peter and Anne Maher from Gorebridge who celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this year and received a message of congratulations from His Majesty King Charles.

Lord Lieutenant visit

A special card to mark their Sapphire Anniversary was presented to them by the King's personal representative in Midlothian, Lord Lieutenant Colonel Richard Callander.

Diamond Wedding anniversary

Peter and Anne previously received a card from the late Queen Elizabeth for their 60th Diamond Wedding anniversary in 2020 but because that was during the Covid lockdown they were unable to have a formal presentation with the Lord Lieutenant.

Simple wedding

Anne and Peter married in 1960 when she was 20 and Peter was 27. Their wedding was a simple affair as Anne sadly lost her mum suddenly so the wedding was bought forward to enable her to care for her father.

Family

The couple have two daughters, Fiona and Lynn and also six grown up grandchildren.

Careers

Anne was a nurse and Peter was a printer though he retrained in residential youth work. He later returned to printing and took pride in nurturing his apprentices. During her career, Anne ran a Chronic Sick unit for the young at Liberton hospital. Peter is also a veteran having been on National Service, in Cyprus.

Serving their community

Anne and Peter have served their communities well - and continue to do so. Peter has supported local Scouts groups and Anne helped deliver Meals on Wheels. She also ran an ice skating venture for children in Mayfield and a film club. They continue to support their community through their involvement with the Ageing Well initiative, the Community Council, an older people’s choir, community drama projects, Gorebridge Cares and the Box and Fiddle Club.

Happy memories

Their older daughter Fiona says: “It is their age defying attitude to life that continues to set them apart and make them such inspiring role models. We have many happy memories from childhood and are grateful to still be making more.”

Peter and Anne are pictured celebrating their anniversary at home with their message of congratulations from His Majesty King Charles presented by Lord Lieutenant Colonel Richard Callander and Provost Debbi McCall who joined their celebrations.
