Midlothian Council enhances community safety with CCTV upgrades

A project upgrading Midlothian’s CCTV system is making communities safer by significantly enhancing Police Scotland’s ability to investigate alleged offences, according to a new report by the council.

Helping solve crimes

The programme of improvements to the county’s CCTV network has been underway since late 2023, and has already helped police in Midlothian solve a variety of serious crimes, track stolen vehicles, and monitor antisocial behaviour.

Respond to incidents

As well as deterring criminal activity and aiding in the identification of offenders, new CCTV cameras in Bonnyrigg, Penicuik, Dalkeith, Loanhead, Danderhall, and Mayfield have enabled officers to monitor and respond to incidents more effectively.

Sheriffhall Park and Ride

Upgrades have also been made to Sheriffhall Park and Ride, including the addition of speed bumps, enhanced LED lighting, and nine new functional CCTV units.

Moveable CCTV units

Plans include the purchase of six mobile CCTV units and a mast trailer for flexible use, which can be moved to different locations as required.

Outdated system

Originally installed in 2006, Midlothian’s existing CCTV system had become increasingly outdated and in need of replacement in recent years.

Upgrade

The council approved a major upgrade in December 2021, committing to invest £471,860 in new multi-sensor cameras and wireless CCTV units, with an additional £97,622 added to the annual budget from 2022/23.

Second phase

A second phase to expand the CCTV network to other areas in Midlothian is currently under consideration in consultation with Police Scotland.

Safer environment

Cabinet member for Community Facilities, Councillor Dianne Alexander said: “The council's investment in modern CCTV technology is a proactive step towards creating a safer environment for all residents.”

Discouraging antisocial behaviour

“As we’re already seeing, these upgrades are enhancing public safety, discouraging anti-social behaviour, and making it easier for the police to investigate crime.”

Welcome outcome

“The upgrade to the digital infrastructure involved is also helping both the council and Police Scotland use resources more efficiently, which is a fantastic outcome for everybody in Midlothian.”
