Moths

There are thousands of species of moth. The main ones found in houses include the Common Clothes Moth, Tapestry Moth and Case Bearing Clothes Moth.

In fact, it's the larval stage of these particular moths which damage woollens, furs, clothes and carpets.

If a moth enters your home from outside, maybe attracted by lighting at night, it will not be a species that causes damage. Moths in general are important as pollinators and as part of the food web.

If you think you have a problem, then what should you look for?

  • If you move furniture and find bald patches in carpets and behind curtains, then this could be the source.
  • If the furniture is not normally moved then this can create dark areas which are favoured by the moths.
  • In addition, check wardrobes and areas where clothing is kept, especially for woollens.

How to treat

There are products you can buy, but carefully read the instructions on the packaging.

How the council treat

After assessing your problem, we can use several products approved under The Control of Pesticides Regulations 1986 as amended.

If treatment is required, we will discuss with you what this would involve.
