Pest control

Fleas

There are quite a few species of flea, but the most common type reported is the cat flea.

The first thing to do if you don’t already, is to treat your cat or dog regularly with an approved veterinary product, and re-apply it as directed. Cat flea collars are also an option but many cats dislike them. If your cat regularly goes outside, it could pick up fleas from other cats or wild animals. If you have a cat flap an untreated cat might enter, unless its design only allows access for your cat.

We will also talk to you about other possible causes of a flea infestation. If you regularly visit other properties, you may have encountered fleas and carried them back to your own home.

You could ask your GP to confirm whether any bites you have are caused by fleas.

How to treat, and control measures

As with other insects, there are products suitable for fleas. Should you choose an approved product, then please follow manufacturer directions on the packaging.

If you are using any veterinary products for your pet, ensure to check with your vet whether it will be safe to use any other products at the same time.

How the council treat

We will ask you to provide a specimen or photo to help confirm whether you have a flea infestation, or perhaps another biting type of insect.

If a treatment is required we will advise you on the options. All products we use are approved under The Control of Pesticide Regulations 1986 as amended.

We will give you a leaflet explaining what you need to do before and after your treatment. You should read this and contact us if you have any questions.
