Household waste recycling centres

Recycling Centres

You can use the Recycling Centres to dispose of furniture, household appliances and bulky waste and to recycle a wide range of waste.

You must use Stobhill Recycling Centre to dispose of:

  • Mattresses
  • Sofas and all other upholstered seating
  • Waste that is larger than the boot of your car with the back seats still up
  • Waste being transported in a van or trailer

We only accept waste from Midlothian households. So we may ask for proof of identity and residence, such as a driving licence, council tax or utility bill.

Visiting the Recycling Centres

  • Check the layout plan before you visit
  • On arrival, tell the staff what type of waste you have brought. They will direct you to a zone where you can off load your waste.
  • Staff cannot help you unload your vehicle. Only bring what you can lift/carry yourself.

Bodyworn CCTV in use

Midlothian Council uses Body Worn Video cameras to enhance safety for both staff and the public. Staff wear these cameras at our Recycling Centres and our Community/Trade Waste Officers wear them working in the community. We hope the cameras deter threatening and abusive behaviour, protect staff, and support crime prevention and detection.

We ask people to treat our staff with respect. Our staff have the right to work without fear, intimidation, or abuse, and harassment of staff will not be tolerated under any circumstances. Please follow all instructions from site staff, whose role is to ensure the safe operation of the recycling centres for everyone.

Staff equipped with Body Worn Video cameras wear clear signs to show that audio and video recording is taking place. The cameras are activated only when necessary, ensuring that recordings are made transparently and proportionately during relevant interactions.

Site Rules

  • Separate your waste into different materials before coming to the site. This will make it quicker and easier to place in the correct skip.
  • Staff will control access to facilities, and limit the number of vehicles on site.
  • Please be patient and respectful to site staff, and follow all their directions. We will not tolerate abuse of our staff.
  • Remain in your vehicle until you are ready to unload your waste.
  • A maximum of 2 people are allowed out of the vehicle to unload items.
  • You will have to offload your own waste. Our staff cannot help with this.
  • You must not enter a container to retrieve or remove any type of material.
  • Children and animals must stay in vehicles at all times.
  • There is no pedestrian access.
